How to Prepare and What to Expect

By Kammes Colorworks

Color Selection

  • Once you’ve made your scheduling deposit and reserved your space on our calendar, the first thing you’ll want to get to work on is your color selection.
  • Please email me your Benjamin Moore color names and or numbers 2 weeks before we begin.
  • Visit my Project Planning page for helpful information regarding color selection (top of page). I also have a professional designer I can recommend who is well worth the reasonable cost, let me know if you’d like her contact information.
  • If you want to be extra sure that a color match is exactly how you want it, let me know and we can plan a time for you to the store to view the color in our product and dial it in further if you wish to do that. Otherwise, I’ll check whether it is within an industry standard and that it looks good against the color swatch.

Your project will be completed in two (2) phases:

  • Phase 1: Onsite work in your home, refinishing the cabinet boxes. This phase is the start of it all and takes 3-5 days for average size projects. You will get exact dates upon scheduling.
  • Phase 2: Installing the finished doors, hardware, and adjustments in your home. This phase will take place 2-3 weeks from your start date and should only take us 1 day to complete.

Phase 1: What to Expect

  • We start by covering the floors and counter tops and numbering the doors. We’ll cover your appliances as well. You won’t want to be cooking in the kitchen while we work, but you will have access to the kitchen and can use the microwave, dishwasher and get something out of the cabinets if you need it.
  • Please do not remove any doors or drawer fronts as we will take care of that after we number everything. You do not need to remove any hardware.

Here’s what Phase 1 looks like:

  • Our process is very clean. My vacuum sander is absolutely excellent at extracting the dust as I’m doing the power sanding. Our customers love it, and so do we! It makes all the difference while we are at work in your home, especially if you have allergies or just like to keep you house clean. You can read all about our process on my Process-Page.

Phase 1: How to Prepare

  • If you will need to have other contractors in your home while we are there please let us know in advance, this can often present challenges.
  • I’m not all about the money, but it does keep my business operating! Once your scheduling deposit has been credited, the remaining balance can be split into two payments. Please have the first half payment ready when we arrive to begin work.
  • We accept Cash or Check. A 5% discount is available for Cash Payments (not check).
  • Credit Cards can be processed for a fee of 3%. Please provide advance notice if you would like to pay with credit.
  • If you are changing handles or knobs please have a new one ready when we get started so we can be sure everything will work correctly. Some cheaper hardware comes with metric mounting bolts and incorrect lengths which can cause set-backs.
  • Reminder- there is a charge for filling and drilling holes for hardware that should be reflected on your price quote.
  • Prior to our arrival, please have your counter tops clear.
  • We like to meet in the middle and ask only for the front half of your shelves and drawers. Please avoid stacking breakable items due to vibrations during the sanding process.
  • You may need to clear your drawers completely if your drawer fronts are not removable:
  • Indoor air temperature can play a big role in keeping your project on track, we have found the best air temperature for our product dry time to be about 68-72 degrees. You can dial back as we leave each day. On our install day your doors will be coming from a cooler environment so having a similar temperature range that day will be important as well. This will also allow us to not sweat on your nice new doors as we are handling them. You can dial back once we finish. We appreciate your accommodations very much.
  • If we are adding carpentry enhancements to your cabinets we ask that you have 1 garage bay open for equipment and materials. We will be using that space to make the saw cuts as well.
  • It will be greatly appreciated if you can have a space in the driveway where we can pull in and unload equipment and load doors, etc.
  •  If you have any pets that might want to get away, please consider that we will do our best to accommodate you, but we will be opening and closing the door a lot when we are loading and unloading the first day, and even more with carpentry. A short time when we begin on install day will be similar.

Phase 2: How to Prepare

  • Please have your final half payment ready when we arrive to complete your project, thank you!!
  • We’ll be back 2-3 weeks from your start date and we’ll need the counters clear again and some space in the drawers:
  • But you can put your things back into the cabinet boxes as long as we have space to install hinges, which generally is not much space needed. As long as things aren’t jammed up to the front edges.

Phase 2: What to Expect

  • We’ll allow the day to get everything put back together and fine tuned. Often we finished before lunch time or by 3pm, but installations are tedious and mechanical so we will be at it for as long as it take to get things looking and working great.
